If you hear the name "Fátima", the first thing that comes in mind is Catholicism BUT if you think this trip is just for Catholic people, you are wrong!
We will visit 3 different landmarks of the history of religion in Portugal through different eras: first the ancient Rome conquered the area by building temples, just to be wiped out by the moors whose establishment's then gave place to the Catholic churches or convents of priests and nuns of the present day. So what will we visit?
- Alcobaça: The first king of Portugal Afonso Henriques killed all the moors in the country and celebrated his victory by transforming their castles into Catholic monuments - one of the those is the Monastery of Alcobaça!
- Batalha: the Monastery of Batalha was built to celebrate the victory against the Spanish back in the 1300s. It is a huge monastery with beautiful green landscapes, it was Portugal’s largest church of its time.
- Fátima: the main catholic pilgrimage site in all of Portugal, famous for the catholic miracle that happened there 100 years ago!
